October is officially here, and just like this hot ass California weather, the October Tay-List is dropping absolute heat. If your fall rotation is still full of the same tired, microwave TikTok tracks the labels keep forcing down your throat, your playlist needs a massive reset. We just spotlighted 5 independent Black artists who are actually in the lab putting in real work. Clear out the dead weight, stop letting lazy algorithms dictate your taste, and go get familiar with the real talent.

An 18-year-old goes to Horn Island and never comes home. His family is left with questions, no indictment, and a justice system telling them to accept the outcome. Nolan Wells’ story hit me differently because I know what it feels like when the evidence in front of you still doesn’t seem to be enough. This is about Nolan, his mother, unanswered questions, and what justice looks like when Black families are the ones demanding it.

Black women in the book community bring something you can’t manufacture: personality, humor, culture, and a way of talking about books that feels like kicking it with somebody you actually know. This Tay Perspective is about five women I enjoy watching because they make reading feel alive.
